Mr and Mrs Yu have worked with cultivated freshwater pearls all their lives. They make jewelry from the best pearls produced by local pearl farmers (their childhood friends). They travel throughout China to sell their pearl jewelry.

 

Their work isn’t glamorous. Far from it. They are part of a group of essentially unknown Chinese migrant workers, only living at home 2 to 3 months each year. The rest of the time, they live out of dingy hostels and eat unhealthy fast-food. They are forced to travel on the slowest trains with standing-room-only tickets. They apply medicinal patches to their shoulders, to alleviate the pain from having to carry their products in huge, heavy backpacks.

 

Mr and Mrs Yu live a life full of sacrifice: they’ve skimped on themselves in order to put their son through school, and to look after their parents (who live with them). And now, given the sacrifices they’ve made, they could use a little help.
